Plot

Exposition: The book takes place in London, during the summer of 2013. Rachel rides the same train every day passing by the houses on the street she used to live on with her ex-husband (Tom). She watches the couple in house 15. She makes a whole dream of how amazing their life together is. She feels as if she knows Jess and Jason, feeling like she knows their lives. When Rachel saw Jess (Megan) cheating on her husband Jason (Scott) she feels a deep hatred and anger boil up in her, because of what happened to her. The next day Megan goes missing and Rachel feels like she knows what happened, so she feels like she has to tell everyone what happened. She couldn't remember exacly what happened the night Jess (Megan) went missing, so people fully believe her because they know she is a drunk.

Rising Action: After Megan goes missing Rachel is questioned by the police, (the only one who knows about the other man.) Megan decides she will tell Scott what she had seen that day on the train, (Megan and Kamal kiss.) Kamal then gets taken into the station for questioning and later released, Rachel believed he had something to do with Megan's disappearance and sets up an appointment with Kamal. Rachel continues to go see Kamal for therapy and to try and bring back her memories but soon realizes how Megan caught feelings. Rachel figures out he's not guilty and has a flashback of that night Megan went missing.

Inciting Incident: Rachel was blackout drunk the night Megan went missing. When Rachel got back to Cathy's house she realized she has a cut on her head and bruises on her body. She told herself that she fell up the stairs to get up to the train, and a redheaded man helped her up. She continued to believe this was true until she got a phone call from Tom saying that Rachel really scared Anna last night. Rachel then does everything in her power to find out what happened that night. She feels as if something bad happened other than just falling, but she never can pinpoint what happened and why she is feeling like that.

Climax: When Rachel is laying down and finally remembers what happened when she was blackout drunk. From this, she remembers that Megan gets in the car with Tom and they drive away. She then goes to Anna, who had just found Megan's phone in Tom's gym bag. Anna doesn't believe that Rachel's phone is in Scott's gym bag when he said he was at the gym. She starts to have a feeling that she knows what happened. That's when she knows she needs to talk to Rachel.

Falling Action: Rachel goes to Scott's house and he chokes her and is mad that she has lied to him. Rachel leaves a note at Toms house and calls him multiple times. When Tom answers he is mad and tell her to leave him and his family alone. Anna finds out Tom went and saw Rachel and talked and goes through his emails.

Resolution: Tom attacks Rachel and knocked her out and threatens to kill her. Rachel then wakes up and realizes she needs to save herself, she grabs a corkscrew and runs knowing she won't be able to jump the fence.

Denouement: She is waiting for Tom to come at her and that's when she stabs him in the neck. Anna then comes out to make sure that he is dead by showing the corkscrew farther into his neck. Anna and Rachel both go to eh station for questioning.
