Themes

Theme 1- Memory

Rachel struggles to remember what happened the night that Megan went missing, and what happened when she would get drunk while with Tom.

Theme 2- Betrayal

Many people lie to the people they lie in the book. Rachel lies to Cathy, police, and Scott. Tom has an affair twice, lies about family and army, and to Anna about Rachel. Anna lies about Rachel to Tom. Megan lies to her husband and has an affair.

Theme 3- Romance

There's a lot of sexual behavior in the book and very sexy descriptive parts when describing characters. Also, Rachel talks about all of the love that she has/had for Tom. The women talk about how happy they were and how happy they used to be.

Mood

Mysterious, suspicious, romantic, and anger

The mood is mysterious because of the three points of views between Anna, Rachel, and Megan. When you are finally understanding what's happening the point of view changes and starts a new part in the story. Its suspicious because some of the characters act fishy in bad situations such as when Scott attacks Rachel and it makes it seem like he's the person that he's not. The mood is also anger because each character shows there anger at some point in the book.

Tone

Secretive, and confusion (when Rachel's drunk)

The tone is secretive because of all the secrets that each character has about their relationship, past, and family. The Tone is also confusion because of Rachels drinking problem and when her point of view comes up she has no idea what happened the day before because she was drunk off her ass. So Rachel would have to think really hard to find out what happened the night before and what she did wrong. It's also confusing when Rachel brings up that Scott's house smelt like bleach and was trying to blame him for the crime.
